[TaiPing Bridge]
Taiping Bridge stretches across TaiPingShan and GuiShan, is the longest single span suspension bridge in Taiwan. The villagers call GuiBeiShan as GuiShan, the 36-turn cloud path is SheShan (the mountain of snake), the WuLian Peak is the LongShan(the mountain of dragon), TaiPing Shan is surrounded by oceans is the treasury cave of lotus. The TaiPing Highway that we see today was built with 40 thousand labors during the Japanese Occupation, is the oldest highway paved in ChiaYi mountain areas, and broadened at 1986 B.C.. Betel nut trees and longan trees grow densely along the highway, and it allows visitors to overlook the spectacular scenery of YunChia Plain when the weather is clear and bright.
Taiping Bridged is located at the altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, at the end tuyere of the Wulian Peak, and has a total length of 281 meters. Limited by its landscape and the geographic location, the North-South structure ( the main structure) and the East-West structure ( the wind resistant system) are not symmetrically built. Beyond that, the overall construction of the two force bar at the Northern Tower is very difficult. The materials of the entire bridge are made in Taiwan, and is the first pedestrian suspension bridge that went under the wind tunnel test, it’s durable in wind level 16. The Northern Tower is 22.8 meters tall and locates at the ridge of TaiPing Shan with the Southern being only 5 meters tall and hides in the mountainside if GuiShan. The Northern Tower looks like the Dragon with its head up in the sky, indicating the “Insects Waken” of the 24 Solar Terms of the Lunar Calendar which means a new beginning of a new year, bringing good luck to the village. The bridge itself acts like the body of the Dragon and the tail of the Dragon (Southern Tower) submerged into the GuiShan. The look itself forms a “Dragon Tortiose” meaning which in Mandarin just sounds like “RongGui” which means “Return with Glory”.
The submerged Southern Tower was designed according to the landscape, to have the feeling of “secretive movement and trace” to give the bridge a mystery side. The appearance of the two force bar of the Northern Tower and the double back cables have the meaning of and old Chinese tale, Two Dragons Securing a Marble, which means protection and security to the area.
